Chapter 27

Nick sat in the living room, waiting for Claire to appear, trying to suppress the steadily rising speed of his pulse. Jacob and he hadn’t needed to do much to get ready for the club. The shower he had taken with Claire had been enough, with a change of clothes and a few minutes in front of the mirror to get his hair the way he wanted it and to shave. He’d strapped a holster to his hips—one that his blazer was more than capable of concealing—and a backup knife to an arm sheath, and he’d been done. Jacob’s preparation was even more minimal; the other man had simply changed into better clothes and accepted the knife from Nick, concealing it somewhere Nick hadn’t even seen.

But Nick had known that Claire—to fit into the general atmosphere of the club—would have to work a little harder. She had retreated into his room after he and Jacob had finished, and Nick couldn’t imagine just what she was doing. He knew from experience that Claire was not the kind of person who would spend an hour or better getting ready. There was no danger of them missing their “appointment” with Little C. But Nick’s nerves were on edge.

“So what’s the deal with you two now?”

Nick glanced at Jacob. “What’s it to you?”

Jacob shrugged. Nick thought that the other man must have done something to his eyes—they were a deeper blue than he remembered.

“Basic conversation. Curiosity.”

Nick considered the question. “You really think you stand a chance of getting her to sleep with you again?”

Jacob laughed. “Not really,” he admitted. “She made it pretty clear that I’m the last man on the planet she’d ever sleep with.”

“You must have said something even worse to her than you did to me,” Nick reflected.

“Considering how pissed she was when I came home—and how happy she was when you came home—I think it’s more than anything I could have said.” Jacob glanced at the door to Nick’s room, and Nick followed the other man’s gaze.

“She doesn’t know whether or not she can trust you,” Nick told the other man. “She knows she can trust me; we’ve got history together. You disappearing after having sex with her, going off to meet with a dealer—that’s suspicious as all hell.”

“Makes sense,” Jacob admitted.

“So where she’s at right now, between you pissing me off badly enough to get me to risk myself—although I can take care of myself if it comes down to it—and being an asshole in general, and being someone she can’t trust…” Nick shrugged. He paused for a moment and turned his attention to Jacob, looking at him intently. “Why exactly am I giving you advice about her?”

“Probably because you know that the situation between the three of us isn’t exactly clear-cut,” Jacob said, shrugging again with a faint smile twitching at the corners of his lips. “You’re attracted to me—whether you want to admit it or not. You know that in spite of how much she hates me, Claire is too, or she wouldn’t have had sex with me in the first place.
